Programs

Since its inception, Horn of Africa has been awarded over 60 grants, including County, Federal, and Foundations such as The California Endowment.  The Horn of Africa has never been found to be out of compliance with a grant.  Current programs and outcomes for 2007/08 include:

  • The Families Together Program - This program provides intensive home visitation to pregnant mothers and mothers who have children under 3 months old.  The family is then provided continuous services for the next 5 years with the aim of preventing children neglect, access to healthcare services for the family, linking the family with opportunities for employment.  This program is modeled after the nationally recognized Healthy Families Model and is the only program that targets refugees in the United States.

  • CDBG Economic Self - Sufficiency-Intensive workshops are held for aspiring and current East African Business owners in how to access capital, how to obtain credit, and how to run their businesses more efficiently.  There is a very good collaboration between ACCION and International Rescue Committee.

  • Health Access Initiative - Through a collaboration with SAY San Diego, which is one of the most prominent and effective non-profits in San Diego County, Horn of Africa works with pregnant mothers and mothers whose children are under 5 years of age to enroll them into one of the existing health insurances such as Medical or Healthy Families.  There is also a follow up that is done to make sure families stay on the program.

  • Start Smart - Through collaboration with SAY San Diego, home visitation is provided to families with children less than 5 years of age to ensure they are well prepared to succeed in preschool.  Children learn developmentally appropriate tasks such as differentiating between colors and basic language skills

  • Gang Prevention Grant - in collaboration with the San Diego Police and Somali Family Service, Horn of Africa was awarded a 2 year grant to address the gang problem in City Heights.  This grant from the State of California will help in reducing gang violence by giving youth alternative activities that will strengthen their self-esteem.

Horn of Africa is very much on the frontline when it comes to San Diego’s East African community. Its offices are located within close proximity of areas most densely populated by Somali, Ethiopian and Eritrean families.

Horn of Africa’s Executive Director, Abdi Mohamoud, brings to the program over fourteen years’ of experience working with refugees. Through a combination of hard work, skill and determination, Mr. Mohamoud has helped Horn of Africa become one of San Diego’s most respected and effective refugee assistance organization.  Abdi Mohamoud currently holds a Master’s degree in Management from Redland University, and graduated from San Diego State University’s prestigious Business School in Business Administration/Finance. He also has completed an Executive Management Program at Stanford University Graduate School of Business. In 2007, he completed a graduate program on violent conflict prevention from the United States Institute for Peace.
